Lapu-Lapu City
Where Lapu-Lapu's men defeated Magellan in 1521, marked from both sides
Two monuments stand a few metres apart on the shore at Punta Engaño. A bronze statue of Lapu-Lapu, raised sword in hand, faces the sea; an obelisk erected by the Spanish in 1866 marks the death of Ferdinand Magellan on the same ground.
That the site commemorates the victor and the defeated together is the interesting thing about it. Every April the battle is re-enacted here as the Kadaugan sa Mactan.
The surrounding park has a mural pavilion and a run of souvenir stalls, and the water in front is shallow and unswimmable.
At Punta Engaño on the north-eastern tip of Mactan, about twenty minutes by taxi from Mactan-Cebu International Airport.
