Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary

The mudflats and mangroves on Olango's southern shore are the country's most important stopover for shorebirds migrating between Siberia and Australia, and the first Philippine site listed under the Ramsar convention.

Egrets, plovers, godwits and sandpipers feed on the exposed flats in tens of thousands during the passage months. A boardwalk runs out over the mangroves to hides at the water's edge.

Timing is everything here and it is set by the tide rather than the clock: the birds feed on a falling tide and scatter when it comes back in.
