A marine sanctuary with a wall that drops away metres from the shallows
Hilutungan — Gilutongan on the map — is a small, densely populated island whose western reef has been a protected sanctuary since the 1990s. The shallow reef flat ends abruptly at a wall, and the drop is close enough to the mooring that snorkellers reach it without swimming far.
Fish are habituated to visitors and gather in numbers as soon as a boat arrives. It is the standard first stop on a Mactan island-hopping run.
Twenty to thirty minutes by outrigger from the wharves at Cordova or Maribago on Mactan. It is normally booked as part of an island-hopping trip rather than on its own.
