Cebu City
A sprawling bronze and concrete tableau of the events that shaped Cebu
Eduardo Castrillo's monument in Parian compresses four centuries into one sculpture: the Battle of Mactan, the baptism of Humabon, the Santo Niño, a Spanish galleon, the canonisation of Pedro Calungsod and the ruined church that once stood on this square.
It was begun in 1997 and took three years. Nothing about it is subtle, and the scale is the point — figures spill over the base at street level so you walk into the middle of it rather than looking at it from a distance.
In Parian, at the eastern end of Colon Street. Walkable from the cathedral in about five minutes.
