Cebu City
The oldest and smallest triangular Spanish fort in the Philippines
Begun under Miguel López de Legazpi in 1565 and rebuilt in stone in the following century, Fort San Pedro is a triangle with two sides facing the sea and one facing inland — the smallest fort of its kind the Spanish built in the archipelago.
It has been a garrison, an American barracks, a school, a hospital and a zoo. The galleries off the courtyard now hold a small museum of documents and salvaged artefacts, and the walls are low enough to walk along.
The gardens inside are shaded and quiet, which is unusual for this part of the city.
At the seaward end of Plaza Independencia, a five-minute walk from Magellan's Cross and roughly fifteen minutes by taxi from uptown Cebu City.
